About the President

Professor David Naylor was appointed in 2005 as the 15th President of the University of Toronto. He holds degrees from Toronto (MD) and Oxford (D Phil) where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar. Professor Naylor is the co-author of approximately 300 scholarly publications, spanning social history, public policy, epidemiology, and health economics, as well as clinical and health services research in most fields of medicine.

Professor Naylor is internationally recognized as a leader in the field of health services research and evidence based health and social policy. He has advised a number of governments on policy issues over the last 15 years and served as chair of the National Advisory Committee on SARS and Public Health in 2003.

Between 1999 and 2005, Professor Naylor was Dean of Medicine at the University of Toronto. He was founding chief executive officer of the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences from 1991 to 1998.

Professor Naylor has received national and international awards for research and academic leadership. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, a Foreign Associate Fellow of the US Institute of Medicine, and an Officer of the Order of Canada.

In June 2007, Professor Naylor published "Towards 2030: Planning for a Third Century of Excellence at the University of Toronto" and launched the Towards 2030 strategic planning initiative.

The initiative culminated with the publication of Towards 2030: A Third Century of Excellence at the University of Toronto in September 2008.
